Eric Spofford knows
a thing or two about overcoming addiction. By his early 20s he was
already battling with substance abuse. He had started drinking at the
young age of 11 years old. By the age of 15 he was into hard drugs.
He was homeless at times between the ages of 17 and 22. He was in and
out of detox and rehab facilities. Finally, at the age of 22, a
12-step program stuck and he has been clean and sober since. Now 32,
Spofford owns and operate rehab facilities throughout New Hampshire.
He has dedicated his life to helping other reclaim their sobriety.
It began in 2008
with The Granite House, located in Derry, NH. This all-male resident
center started out with 11 beds and was a sober house. It has since
expanded quickly and is now a full treatment and rehabilitation
center with 42 beds. The recovery of all who enter The Granite House
is centered around the 12-step program. They also offer services such
as community involvement, educational assistance, skills for daily
sober living, and holistic practices. They also offer an “adventure
experience” which helps the residents learn about building trust
and learning skills that will help them communicate more effectively
with others and build opportunities for themselves. They go on field
trips into the wilderness to go on hikes and other adventures. Once a
resident has left The Granite House they are still involved with the
program as there are graduate monitoring services where the residents
can have supervision and therapy to ensure that they remain sober.
After the seeing how
The Granite House was helping young men to become clean and sober,
Spofford decided to continue his venture and opened the New Freedom
Academy in Canterbury, NH in 2015. This is also a 12-step centered
rehabilitation and treatment facility that is geared towards men ages
18-35. Also in 2015, Spofford purchased land on top of Green Mountain
in Effingham, NH that used to be the Lakeview Neurorehabilitation
Center.
Green Mountain
Treatment Center opened early this year. It offers detoxification,
treatment, and rehabilitation services to men and woman who are over
the age of 18. Spofford is committed to ensure that residents of his
facilities are fully immersed in the 12-step program and have support
the entire way through. Green Mountain offers transportation
services, 24/7 nursing care, therapy, detox, and rehab services. They
also have a full kitchen staff on hand with chefs that create healthy
meals three times per day to ensure that the residents are getting
the proper nutrition through their recovery. In March the Green
Mountain Treatment Center partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield and
is now considered to be in-network so that they are accessible to
more residents than other treatment centers.
There are many
testimonials from friends and families of the residents of the three
centers, as well as stories from the residents themselves. Everyone
has high praise for Spofford and the work that he has put in to make
sure that anyone that needs help can get it. He may have had a
checkered past but he has used his firsthand knowledge of addiction
to help save the lives of others who are battling with the same
