Around 8pm last night flames were seen shooting from an industrial park at the corner of Elm and Maple in Derry that held multiple businesses. Firefights from multiple towns were called in to help fight the blaze. Manchester's Truck 7 and Engine 3 were on the front lines fighting the flames alongside other firefighters from Derry, Chester, Windham, Salem, and many others. It took about four hours for them to get the flames under control.
When I arrived at the scene there was a large ball of fire that exploded into the sky below MFD's ladder. It was a sight, that is for sure. There was a very large crowd watching as the firefighters worked. They went into defensive mode which means none of the firefighters were to enter the building, they were to fight from the exterior only. One of their main concerns was over the chemicals that were stored in the auto body shops that were there.
The four businesses included were:
Linc's Auto Body
Industrial Equipment
Sportwagen Mechanic Shop
New England Tanya Finishes
One residence was evacuated for safety. There is no known cause yet but investigators will be working for the next few days to try and figure it out. Driving back through the center of Derry and driving back up Route 28 all you could see was smoke lingering in the air. You could smell the fire from miles away.
Fortunately there were no injuries reported.
This is such a sad day for the people of Derry. My heart goes out to all that have been affected by this fire. Great job to all of the firefighters from local and surrounding areas. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. This is the second day of your new newsletter and I think you are doing a great job Manchvegas! You work hard. Keep up the great reporting work on keeping everyone informed! Thank you!
