In 1996 Coca Cola decided that it needed to come up with a soda to compete with Mountain Dew which is produced by Pepsi. And so Surge was born. It was a citrus drink with a catchy name and eye-catching can. Unfortunately for Surge lovers everywhere, it did not last long. It was taken off of the shelves in 2001 because they could not compete with Mountain Dew.
Well never fear children of the 90s. Surge is back! Coca Cola is producing and selling Surge on Amazon.com for a limited time. For now it is a test to see how sales will do with a possible resurrection of the cult soda depending on what sales look like. A spokesperson for Coca Cola said that even though there were a lot of people that really loved Surge they weren't sure how many will actually buy it if it is available again.
A Facebook page called The Surge Movement has over 131k followers, all with an urge for Surge. In 2013 they even created a fundraiser that collected $4,000. They took that money and bought a billboard next to the Coca Cola HQ building in Atlanta which stated, "Dear Coke: We couldn't buy Surge, so we bought this billboard instead".
The going rate for a 12-pack of 16 oz. cans of Surge on Amazon is $14. Seems like a big price to pay for soda ($1.16 per can as opposed to the normal $0.40 - $0.70 per can) but for Surge lovers it just may be worth the price. There were so many orders when the product was released for the first time on Monday that the product was unavailable for a while.
If you are a Surge lover you can buy your favorite soda here for a limited time (currently it is sol out again, keep an eye out!): SURGE
