***RIP Officer Stephen Arkell - Series of Events in Brentwood***

Yesterday the Brentwood PD lost one of their brothers in a horrific tragedy. Here is a rough timeline of how the events unfolded.

4:02pm - A call was received at the Brentwood PD for a domestic dispute at the home of Walter Nolan which was located at 46 Mill Pond Road in Brentwood.

4:10pm - Officer Arkell arrived at the Nolan residence. He asked 86 year old Walter Nolan if it was okay for him to enter the house. As soon as he stepped inside he was shot and killed.

4:14pm - Walter Nolan was found outside of the home by Fremont PD officer Derek Franek. Franek handcuffed Walter Nolan as a precaution as he had heard reports of gunfire. Walter Nolan was brought to the hospital and checked out. He was then later released.

4:17pm - Franek entered the home and found Arkell on his back. He could tell right away that the officer had passed. Shots were fired once more but Franek was able to escape out the back of the house without injury.

For the next half hour multiple units from surrounding cities arrived on the scene as well as the SWAT team. No one fired their weapons as they had no idea where the shooter was.

4:47pm - Smoke began to pour from the roof of the home. Flames could be seen a short time after.

5:00pm - The fire spread to the front door but firefighters were not able to get to the scene to put the fire out. The police had no idea where the shooter was and wanted to make sure that the firefighters were safe.

5:49pm - A large explosion shook the house off of it's foundation and flung debris everywhere. The fire spread very quickly and completely engulfed the duplex. The resident that lived on the other side of the duplex was able to get out safely before the explosion.

A short time after the explosion the firefighters were allowed to begin putting the fire out. It had spread to the woods behind the house as well. They did what they could to the house that was next door to make sure that the fire did not spread. The fire was knocked down relatively quickly. After the fire was put out they found the remains of two men. One of the bodies belonged to Officer Arkell. The other belonged to 49 year old Michael Nolan who was determined to be the shooter who murdered the officer.

Although there is still no word on what caused the fire at this time they do believe that it was intentionally set.

48 year old Stephen Arkell was a father to two teenage girls as well as a husband. His family has asked for privacy during this horrible time. He was a part time police officer with the department and had been with the PD for 15 years. He was a well-liked and very respected man.

There will be a candlelight vigil tonight at 7pm at the Brentwood Recreation Center.

RIP Officer Arkell
