***Hand-held Cell Phone Use Behind the Wheel: Banned or Not?***

The Senate has been very busy today!

A bill was just passed that will go into effect next year to ban all hand-held cell phone use while behind the wheel of a vehicle. They have sent it back to the House with an amendment that the state needs to educate people on the dangers of cell phone use while driving and what the ban is about.

Talking on a cell phone will still be allowed while driving but only if you have a built-in phone bluetooth in your stereo like many new models do, a bluetooth earpiece, or a two way radio. The bill that will hopefully be passed by the House will also ban all minors from using the cell phone in any way while they are behind the wheel. This includes when they are stopped at a red light or a stop sign. It does not include when there is an emergency or when they are pulled off to the side of the road.

I think this is a great move as I have seen so many people texting while they are driving and almost causing accidents. It is easy to say that you will never do it but then while you are behind the wheel you get a text that you are expecting or have been waiting for and think, what is the harm? The harm is that you could kill someone. I myself text while I am at a stoplight, but never when I am in motion.
