We have seen many places come and go at 250 Dubuque Street. Sub Contractors held the spot down for a while, then in came Butter My Biscuit. After that left the building stood empty on the corner of Dubuque and Putnam, just waiting for a new tenant. Last week Fricker's Neighborhood Grill opened their doors to hungry West Siders. So....how was it?
When you walk in the door you are immediately greeted by friendly staff. There is a dining room and a full bar at the front of the restaurant and a smaller section that is separated by a short wall with booths and small tables in the back. In a world that is full with electronic stimulation, Fricker's brings you back to a time before cell phones and video games with a shelf that held board games that you could play while you were waiting for your food. My son chose Connect Four. It was really nice to have an option other than a tablet sitting right at the table for you with video games like so many restaurants seem to have these days. You get to interact with the people you are with and have some fun while you wait for your food!

The dinner menu was somewhat small but had delicious options. (Forgot to grab a take home menu, will get one when I go back Saturday). I opted for the sirloin steak tips with rice and veggies. The rice was cooked wonderfully. The veggies were sweet potato and some other veggies, not really sure what they were. I didn't eat much of those. The steak tips...wow. Tender, juicy, and seasoned/marinated perfectly. They were so good!! I asked for them to be cooked well done (I know, I know...what?!) and they were cooked just as I had requested. My son ordered a grilled cheese and onion rings. The grilled cheese had a generous amount of white cheddar cheese in the middle and was toasted to buttery perfection. The onion rings are reminiscent of those you find at Goldenrod. Not too much batter, lightly salted, and hardly any grease. Delicious!!

Some other items on the dinner entree menu included steak with marsala mushroom au jus, an angus burger, chicken and marinara, as well as seafood options. They have a special of the day which the waitress will be more than happy to tell you about. They also offer appetizers such as nachos, breaded mozzarella, and chicken tenders. They have a salad and soup menu as well.
For desserts they had large freshly baked cookies, tiramisu, carrot cake, and the OMG cake. And it is OMG. I have yet to eat any of it because I am still full from dinner but just looking at it makes you say OMG. It is a six layer cake. Two layers of chocolate on the top, two layers of vanilla cake in the middle, and two layers of red velvet on the bottom, separated by a chocolate frosting. On the outside of the cake is a light buttercream. More than enough for two or even three people to share!

Our waitress Ashley was very friendly! She came right over to get our drink order, double checked all of the food ordered to make sure there was no garlic (I am highly allergic), and checked on us throughout the meal. She was helpful when I asked questions and even engaged in some small talk with me over a tattoo that I have (a cancer ribbon, we had some common ground with it). She smiled, was very polite, and shook my hand when introducing herself. I look forward to having her as my waitress again.
Hop on over to Fricker's and try the food!! It is wonderful!! Welcome to the West Side :)
